Mastering Sun Safety: The Ultimate Guide to Reef-Friendly Sunscreens for Families

Basking in the warm glow of the sun is a quintessential part of Spring break whether you’re on the beach or the slopes, but it comes with responsibilities. Sun safety isn't just about protecting our skin; it's also about safeguarding the delicate balance of marine ecosystems. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the importance of sun safety, talk to top experts, and offer some of my personal recommendations for reef-friendly sunscreens that cater to the whole family's needs.

I spoke to Dr. Lyndsey Garbi, Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer at Blueberry Pediatrics, and asked her for two truths and a lie about sunscreens. Dr. Garbi said:

Two Truths:

  • Sunscreen should be broad-spectrum to protect against UVA and UVB rays.

  • Sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are best for areas of the body most likely to get a sunburn, such as the nose, cheeks, tops of ears, and shoulders.

Lie:

You don't need sunscreen if it is not sunny.

The truth behind this: Sunscreen should be worn any time your child is outdoors. Up to 80% of the sun's UV rays can penetrate clouds, and UV rays can reflect off water, sand, concrete, and especially snow.

Before we dive into sunscreen recommendations, let's understand the basics of sun safety. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun comes in two main forms: UVA and UVB rays. These rays can cause sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer. The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) indicates a sunscreen's ability to block UVB rays, with higher numbers offering greater protection. However, SPF alone isn't enough. We must also embrace other sun-safe practices, such as wearing hats, sunglasses, seeking shade, and wearing protective clothing.

The Impact of Sunscreen on Marine Life

While sunscreen protects our skin, certain chemicals found in conventional sunscreens pose a threat to marine life, particularly coral reefs. Research has shown that ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate can contribute to coral bleaching and disrupt marine ecosystems. Choosing reef-safe sunscreens is crucial to minimize this impact and preserve our underwater wonders.

What Makes a Sunscreen Safe for Kids and Reefs

When selecting sunscreen for your family, it's essential to avoid harmful ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate. Instead, opt for mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which offer effective protection without harming marine life. Look for products specifically formulated for children, ensuring they're gentle on sensitive skin while providing broad-spectrum protection.

Top 5 Reef-Friendly Sunscreens for the Whole Family

Sqween Sunscreen Stick: Recommended by the EWG Sunscreen Guide, this all-natural zinc oxide sunscreen offers broad-spectrum protection without harmful chemicals. Perfect for infants to adults, it's gentle on sensitive skin and safe for marine life. Sqween Founder, Samantha Miller, Sqween, emphasizes the importance of empowering kids to be sun-safe on their own: "Something that not everyone knows about sunscreen - it’s FDA regulated, it’s an OTC product— so legally schools and camps can’t apply it for kids without parental consent/waivers. So, it’s not just about kids having a good experience but empowering them to be sun safe on their own."

Waxhead Coral Reef Safe Sunscreen Stick: Made from 25% non-nano zinc oxide, this biodegradable sunscreen is Hawaii approved and suitable for the entire family. Its water-resistant formula ensures long-lasting protection, making it ideal for active kids. It also comes in different shades and blends well with various skin tones.

Kukui Nui Mineral Sunscreen Stick: Perfect for athletic families, this mineral sunscreen stick provides deep protection without migrating on the skin, even during rigorous activities. Formulated with sensitive skin in mind, it's a reliable choice for those with allergies. Side note: I’ve been using this one for years, and it doesn’t budge in the water and does not burn my super sensitive eyes. I also apply it around my eyes to walk around the city under my makeup.

Babo Botanicals Sunscreen: My kid would run when I took out sunscreen, and it’s still a battle with an "I’m fine, Mom." Easy to apply and perfect for impatient kids, this spray sunscreen offers convenience without compromising safety. Its gentle formula is free from harsh chemicals, making it suitable for children and adults alike. * Babo is a Dr. Garbi favorite!)

Coolibar SPF Swim and Clothing: For added sun protection, consider incorporating rash guards into your family's wardrobe. Brands like Coolibar offer stylish and functional options that complement any outdoor adventure. There are tons of affordable options on Amazon and Target; be sure to ensure they actually offer SPF protection! As my Grandma Rose often reminded us, "You can still get a sunburn through a white Hanes T-shirt,"—a shoutout to all the '80s kids out there. And she was right, by the way. But, I digress.

Applying Sunscreen the Right Way

"Parents should apply sunscreen carefully and more often than you'd expect! Apply it before sun exposure and then at least hourly, or after being in the water or sweating heavily, whichever comes first. Get kids used to having sunscreen applied from an early age, so it becomes a non-issue and not a battleground," says Dr. Carly Wachtel Snyder, a NYC psychiatrist. also known as “MD for Moms”

Sun safety is a vital aspect of family wellness, encompassing both skin protection and environmental preservation. By choosing reef-friendly sunscreens and adopting sun-safe practices, we can enjoy the sun responsibly while safeguarding our planet for future generations.
