On our radar

Healthy Habits

Stay consistent with routines and times for tasks.

 Back To School:

Tips on starting school strong!

Planning

    •    Create to-do lists to stay motivated and productive.

    •    If your child is young, create a visual schedule.

    •    Create morning and night routines that are manageable with 3 - 6 steps depending on your child’s age.

    •    To do lists can increase a sense of confidence and calm.

Healthy Habits

    •    Stay consistent with routines and times for tasks.

    •    Promote eating a nutritious breakfast.

    •    Children who eat a healthy breakfast focus better and have more energy.

    •    Limit screen time during the week to 2 hours or less per day and stop screen-time well before bedtime.

Study Habits

    •    Help kids find an effective study or homework schedule in advance.

    •    Find a consistent, quiet, and motivating work space.

    •    Schedule homework time into afternoon activity schedules.

    •    Promote study breaks.

    •    Keep all screens off during study times.

    •    Seek needed support with homework completion or organization.

Sleep Habits

    •    Sleep is critical for mental health.

    •    Research by the American Academy of Pediatrics states that children transition to kindergarten better if they regularly get at least 10 hours of sleep.

    •    Help plan and keep a sleep routine. Include calming activities such as reading, meditation, breathing exercises or prayers.

    •    The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and National Sleep Foundation recommends:

1    5-year-olds should get 10-13 hours of sleep

2    School-age children (6 to 13 years old) should get 9 to 11 hours of sleep

3    Teenagers (14 to 18 years old) should get 8-10 hours of sleep

Being Supportive

    •    Remember to provide your child with praise daily, after morning and nighttime routines. Comment on what they have done well and provide factual feedback that will build and maintain motivation.

    •    Be intentional daily with listening to your child. Be available to listen to stories about peers, classes and feelings. Ask open ended questions that help you to learn more.
